Mitre might (Yanks 8, Blue Jays 4)

I really like how Mr. Mitre handled himself in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. Toronto is a good-hitting club at home, and Mitre hasn't had that much success this year. After giving up 2 runs in the first he must have been rather down on himself. And yet he stuck it out and pitched into the 5th inning without giving up another run.

The Yankees were clever in the way they set things up for the upcoming series. They'll send Chamberlain, Burnett, Sabathia, and Pettitte to the mound at Yankee stadium to face the second place Red Sox, who have won all 8 games against the Yankees but still can't stay in first place in the division.

Why is that? Well one can say that the Sox match up well against the Yankees, or that the Yankees have choked against the Sox or played poorly.

I've got a third explanation. The Sox were lucky. They were hot while the Yankees were still organizing their team and working out the kinks in the lineup and bullpen. Cano was their #5 hitter, A-Rod wasn't around much, the rotation hadn't got going and the there were some chumps in the bullpen. But no more.

If the Sox manage to win 3 or 4 games in at Yankee stadium this weekend, then fans and the media truly have something to talk about. Personally, I think this is the weekend that the Yankees will beat the Red Sox, and not just once, but two or three times. A sweep would be wonderful, a massacre in a long tradition of August thumpings, a sweep that would nudge the Red Sox closer to where they belong: irrelevance.
