I usually wait until the end of a game to post, but today's game has been special.
What were the Roid Sox thinking bringing the 40+ Smoltz into Yankee Stadium and this type of environment? Didn't they know that the Stadium would be rocking and the Yankees would be looking to tee off? Smoltz is your 5th starter, for crying out loud. That's poor planning and POOR ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS!
The action got going in the third inning as the top of the Yankee lineup came up for the second time. Jeter blasted Smoltz's first pitch 400 feet into center, forcing Ellisbury to throw himself up against the wall to make the catch. On seemingly the next pitch Damon homered to tie the game. A couple pitches later Tex launched all ball off the wall on the fly for a double and A-Rod next lofted one to the warning track. Smoltz got out of it (and got two more runs of support in the top of the 4th for a 3-1 lead) but you could sense that the rout was on.
In the bottom of the 4th the Yankees finally got to Smoltz and put him where he belongs, on the bench. Posada doubled, Cano singled, Swisher walked, Melky homered, Damon singled, Tex doubled, A-Rod walked, Matsui beat out a double play ball and then Posada crushed a monstrous home run to deep center that bounced straight up off the tops of the concrete walls surrounding monument park.
So now I'm thinking, I want to see EVERYONE. Okajima, Declaramen, Ramirez, EVERYONE. Maybe they'll need their whole bullpen to stop the Yankees today. And then what? They've got 3 more days in the Bronx against this lineup. And we're going to pound and pound and pound on them. It's almost 10:00 and we're still in the 6th inning. It's going to be a long night, and for the Sox I hope a very long weekend, a demoralizing one that breaks their spirit and adds to the glorious Yankee tradition of post-all-star break domination in this long, one-sided rivalry.
