And now we have a magic number (Yanks 6, Blue Jays 4)

Here's how things stand:

The Yankees officially have a magic number. Of course, every team has a magic number of some sort, but the Yankees now have a magic number in September that is under 20. That means it's time to start counting down! And the Yankees' magic number for the AL East is 19.

The Yankees are also hoping to secure home field advantage throughout October (the AL won the all-star game, which guarantees the AL pennant winner home field in the World Series). They are 6 games ahead of the Angels (5 in the loss column) right now. Against the Angels the Yankees' magic number is 22.

It's not clear how Girardi will treat home field advantage. But one thing seems to be emerging: the Yankees are getting rested for the postseason. Every day another key Yankee takes a break, and while Mariano's groin heals up, Hughes has taken over the closing roll, with spectacular results. The more rest this aging lineup gets, the more effective they'll be in the playoffs. The key will be for the Yankees NOT to lose any games because they're not playing at full strength.

By the way, the Yankees beat Toronto again today. They'll try for a 3-1 Rogers Center series win tomorrow, with Mitre taking the mound against Brian Tallet. Let's adjust that magic number downwards!
