Tonight was Jeter's night.
It started with a bunt single to the third base side. It was so perfectly placed, no throw could hope to have been made. I think a lot of Yankee fans were like me and didn't know that Jeter is an expert bunter...well, he is.
When he tied Gerig's mark, with an opposite field single to right, the stadium erupted like he'd just won the game. Just electrifying.
It was an unforgettable moment, a moment in which everything else faded away, and only Jeter mattered. For that moment every Yankee fan had the opportunity to stand up and applaud Mr. Jeter, and not just for what he accomplished tonight, but really for everything he's done as a Yankee, all the inspirational moments he's provided year after year, living proof that any of us can excel when it matters most. Today was the day every Yankee fan came together, and for just a moment, we had the chance to say, "Thanks Mr. Jeter."
Video of all the hits.
