They booed Papelbon off the field, said Youkilis.
And in the end, they didn't even applaud their team for their 95 win season and noble effort in game 3, instead turning their backs and heading for the exits in utter silence.
It was a brutal loss for the Sox. But it was made even more so by the vengeful treatment of the team by their fans, who must have felt betrayed so many times this season, by Manny, by Ortiz, by Francona for plunking anyone who dares to succeed at the plate against them, and by Theo, whose immaturity and lack of judgement came through when he trotted out Dave Henderson to throw out the first pitch against the Angels, a move that had to have fired up the Angels more than anyone else. I mean, after all that, who wouldn't do what Victor Martinez did, wielding a bat in disgust and smashing a cooler to smithereens? And it makes one think: who was he so mad at? Himself, or his teammates and the city for which he misguidedly plays?
The Red Sox and their fans got what they richly deserved today. Not only a sweep, but a crushing loss, one in which their closer ultimately failed them in their most urgent time of need.
Typical Sawks, those luvable losers! We bid you adieu for another season, and good riddance.
Suck it, Boston.
